The Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) just announced their 2015 Awards for Excellence in Planning Practice, and EcoPlan has been recognized for an silver award in the category of Research and New Directions in Planning for Planning for Climate Change: A Values-based, Strategic Approach for Urban Planners.

The guide was developed with and for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to be used as their primary climate change adaptation planning tool for their Cities and Climate Change Initiative, a growing global network of 40 cities engaged in climate planning and urban planning capacity development.

With a focus on cities in low- and middle-income countries where the challenges are unique and the human stakes of planning for climate change are particularly high, Planning for Climate Change incorporates an innovative approach for addressing climate change through structured, values-based, participatory planning processes. While recognizing the varied scope, scale and complexity of climate change at the local level, the guide’s fundamental goals are to provide a basic understanding of climate change at the local level and the core concepts behind successful planning for climate change adaptation, and to provide a place for individuals and organizations to simply start the planning process.

Thanks so much to UN-Habitat and EcoPlan staff who worked so hard to bring this project to life. We are excited to see that it has been downloaded over 2500 times from the UN-Habitat website and we are already starting to hear stories about its use around the world!
